Exploring regularities and self-similarity in Internet traffic
نویسنده
چکیده
The characterization and quantitative description of Internet traffic is becoming increasingly important in light of the rapid growth being observed in the size and usage of the network. Modeling of modern teletraffic and large telecommunications networks with fractal stochastic processes has been investigated by analyzing traffic measurements collected on the “Federico II” university WAN link to the National Research Network backbone, and using them to test the existence of fractal behavior and specific properties. A fractal character with approximate selfsimilarity and statistical long-range dependence has been observed in the Internet access traffic measurements. This approach leads to some interesting insights about whether and how regularities in Internet user behavior can be noticed and exploited. The derived characterization could be seen as a first step to a generalized parametric Internet traffic model. Key-Words: Internet traffic modeling, self-similarity, long-range dependency

The Dynamics of Internet Traffic: Self-Similarity, Self-Organization, and Complex Phenomena
The Internet is the most complex system ever created in human history. Therefore, its dynamics and traffic unsurprisingly take on a rich variety of complex dynamics, self-organization, and other phenomena that have been researched for years. This paper is a review of the complex dynamics of Internet traffic. Departing from normal treatises, we will take a view from both the network engineering ...
متن کاملSelf-similarity of the simulated internet traffic from the source with clustered fragmented periodic output
Abstract The property of self-similarity for various time scales of the internet traffic is considered for the cluster model of the source with fragmented distribution of the activity rate, constant within each mode of the cluster fragment. It is demonstrated that the clustering itself provides the level of self-similarity, which is dependent on the size of the cluster zones. Specifically, it i...
متن کاملSelf-Similar Traffic and Network Dynamics
One of the most significant findings of traffic measurement studies over the last decade has been the observed self-similarity in packet network traffic. Subsequent research has focused on the origins of this self-similarity, and the network engineering significance of this phenomenon. This paper reviews what is currently known about network traffic self-similarity and its significance. We then...
متن کاملNon-linear Regression for Bivariate Self-similarity Identification - Application to Anomaly Detection in Internet Traffic Based on a Joint Scaling Analysis of Packet and Byte Counts
Internet traffic monitoring is a crucial task for network security. Selfsimilarity, a key property for a relevant description of internet traffic statistics, has already been massively and successfully involved in anomaly detection. Self-similar analysis was however so far applied either to byte or Packet count time series independently, while both signals are jointly collected and technically ...
متن کاملTraffic Analysis of Internet-based Multiplayer Online Games from a Client Perspective
An analysis of self-similarity in traffic generated by the popular Internet-based online game engine, Unreal Engine, is presented. Client-side packet traces are collected and analyzed for both client and server traffic. Initial analysis of over two million packets indicates client generated traffic shows strong long-range dependence of a self-similar nature primarily due to packet interarrival ...
